A Lawn From Bare Dirt, Without Rolling Out Sod
New lawn hydroseeding in Oklahoma City is how most of our homeowners go from bare dirt to grass without paying for sod. The job might be a new house where the builder left a scraped, compacted lot, a yard torn up by a sewer line or pool dig, or an old lawn so thin and weedy that starting over is easier than patching. Once the soil is ready, the whole area gets one sprayed coat in which seed, fertilizer, wood fiber mulch and tackifier are mixed together. The mulch dries into a soft green mat that holds moisture against the seed and keeps it from washing away in the first rain.
Choosing the grass
Most sunny Oklahoma City yards end up in Bermuda. Oklahoma State University Extension lists Bermuda, buffalograss and zoysia as the warm-season grasses planted most often in the state, and Bermuda is the one that tolerates heat and drought while still taking foot traffic. Buffalograss needs less water and mowing but is better suited to the drier western half of the state and does not handle heavy wear. Under big trees, warm-season grasses thin out, so shaded yards are usually seeded with tall fescue. Many lots need both: Bermuda in the open, fescue under the oaks. We can spray two blends on the same property.
Building the seedbed
The most common reason a new lawn fails is the ground underneath it. Builder lots are often compacted subsoil with the topsoil hauled away. We rip or till compacted areas, bring in topsoil where the existing soil is poor, and fine grade the yard so runoff heads away from the foundation. OSU Extension calls for at least a one percent slope away from buildings and a seedbed firm enough that a footprint sinks no deeper than half an inch. If the yard has a sprinkler system or drain lines going in, those should be finished before final grading.
Timing in Oklahoma City
Bermuda goes down from May 1, when the soil is warm enough, and OSU Extension recommends having most seeded Bermuda in by July 1 so it roots before winter. Tall fescue goes down in late September and October, with March as a second option. If you close on a house in December, we can stabilize the yard with mulch now and come back to seed in May. Seeding warm-season grass in the fall is money spent on a lawn that may not make it through its first winter.
Watering the first month
A hydroseed lawn needs water more than anything else. The seed sits on the surface, so the top inch of soil has to stay moist with light, frequent watering. OSU Extension advises daily light watering for at least 10 to 14 days. In an Oklahoma City summer, with highs over 90 on many days, that can mean two or three short cycles a day. Once the grass is up and filling in, switch to longer, less frequent watering so roots go deeper. HomeGuide says seed germinates in 5 to 7 days when conditions are good, with the first mowing at four to six weeks.
Hydroseeding cost
Hydroseeding cost depends on square footage, slope, how much prep the soil needs and the seed blend. Published national ranges run from roughly $0.06 to $0.35 a square foot, varying by cost guide, and many companies set a minimum job fee. Sod runs much higher per square foot. The table below shows ranges from named sources. After we walk the yard you get a written estimate, and we hold to that number.

From Bare Dirt to First Mow
1. Site visit
We check sun and shade, slope, soil, drainage and where the truck can park, then write the estimate.
2. Soil prep
Compacted ground is loosened, debris removed, topsoil added where needed and the yard fine graded.
3. Spray
One even coat carries the seed, mulch, fertilizer and tackifier together; slopes get a heavier rate.
4. Watering
You keep the surface moist with short daily cycles; we leave written steps.
5. Check-in
We look at coverage after germination and talk through any thin spots.

New Lawn Hydroseeding Questions
How much does hydroseeding cost for an average Oklahoma City yard?
As national figures, HomeGuide gives $1,000 to $1,750 for a lawn of 5,000 square feet and $1,900 to $2,800 for a quarter acre. Topsoil, slopes and heavy prep add to that. We give you a written price after seeing the yard.
Can I hydroseed Bermuda in the fall?
It is not a good idea. OSU Extension recommends getting most seeded Bermuda in by July 1 so it can root before winter. In fall we usually seed fescue or put down a temporary cover and seed Bermuda the next May.
How much watering does fresh hydroseed need in an Oklahoma City summer?
Keep the top inch moist. That usually means several short cycles a day for the first two weeks in summer, then less often but longer once the grass fills in.
Will hydroseed grow on a builder's compacted lot?
Not well without prep. We rip or till the compacted layer and add topsoil where needed before spraying. That step decides whether the lawn thrives or struggles.
When can I walk on or mow a hydroseed lawn?
Stay off it except to water until the grass is established. HomeGuide puts the first mowing at four to six weeks after spraying.
