Seeding Both Sides of Norman

Hydroseeding in Norman depends a lot on which side of town the lot is on. The western part of the city is prairie, mostly flat at around 1,171 feet. The eastern part, around Lake Thunderbird, holds about 6,000 acres of lakes and Cross Timbers forest. The same grass seed does not behave the same way in both places.

West side: open and windy

Prairie lots are easy to grade but get steady south winds, averaging near 10 mph. Wind dries out a fresh seedbed fast. We use a full hydromulch rate here so the seed stays moist and does not blow off, and we time the first watering for right after we spray.

East side: trees and runoff

Lots near the lake sit in woods and on more uneven ground. Fine grading matters more, and any slope that feeds a draw toward the lake gets silt fence and mulch before seed. Lake Thunderbird is fed by the Little River and supplies drinking water to Norman, Del City and Midwest City. Locals call it "Lake Dirtybird" for its murky water, which tells you how much fine sediment already reaches it.

A long growing season

Norman averages a 209-day growing season and about 38 inches of rain a year, with May and June the wettest months. That gives a wide window for warm-season grass. We favor late spring for Bermuda and save fall for overseeding and lawn renovation on existing yards.

Historic districts

In the Miller and Chautauqua historic districts, exterior changes need approval from the Norman Historic Preservation Commission. Seeding a lawn usually is not an issue, but if a job includes regrading next to a historic home we ask owners to check first.

We take on new lawn installation, lawn repair, erosion control and dirt work throughout Norman, from campus-area rentals to acreage east of the lake. Get a free estimate or call (405) 529-7119.

Norman Questions

Is hydroseeding a good fit for prairie lots on Norman's west side?

Yes. Flat, open ground sprays evenly. The main concern is wind drying the seedbed, so we use a heavier mulch layer.

Why do you add silt fence on lots near Lake Thunderbird?

Bare soil there drains toward a drinking water lake that already carries a lot of sediment. A fence keeps your dirt on your lot.

Can I overseed my existing Norman lawn in the fall?

Yes. Fall is a good time to thicken thin areas and fix bare spots, especially on lawns that took a beating over summer.

Do you work near the historic districts?

Yes. We just ask owners to confirm any regrading with the city first, since exterior changes there need commission approval.
