Getting the Ground Right Before Anything Grows

Grading, topsoil and dirt work in Oklahoma City is the step that decides whether a new lawn drains, roots and lasts. Seed cannot fix a yard that holds water against the foundation or sends every storm across the neighbor's patio. We handle yard grading on new and existing homes, land grading on larger lots, topsoil delivery and spreading, and the small excavation and trenching work that often goes with drainage fixes, such as burying downspout lines or cutting a shallow swale. When the ground is ready, we hydroseed it.

Drainage first

OSU Extension calls for at least a one percent slope away from buildings so water does not settle around them. Many older Oklahoma City lots have settled over decades until the yard tilts back toward the house, and many new lots were rough graded by a builder and never finished. We shoot the grades, find where water goes now, and reshape the yard so it runs to the street, a swale or another safe outlet. On flat lots near the old river bottoms, that can take careful work with very little fall to spare.

Breaking up hard ground

New construction lots are typically compacted by equipment, and clay-rich upland soils across the metro get hard and tight when they dry. OSU Extension recommends cultivating the upper 8 to 10 inches where possible, and at least the top 4 to 6 inches, to relieve compaction and mix in amendments. We rip or till compacted areas before final grading so roots and water can move down instead of across.

Topsoil and amendments

Where the topsoil was scraped off or the ground is mostly subsoil, we bring in topsoil. OSU Extension says that improving tight clay takes at least 4 to 6 inches of loamy topsoil or coarse sand mixed into the top 2 to 4 inches of existing soil, not just spread on top. A thin layer of topsoil laid over hard clay creates a boundary that water and roots do not cross well. If a soil test calls for lime or sulfur to adjust pH, or for phosphorus and potassium, we work those into the top 4 to 6 inches before final grading.

Fine grading for seed

The last pass is fine grading: removing rocks, clods and debris and smoothing the surface. OSU Extension describes a good seedbed as firm enough that footprints sink no more than half an inch, with the top half inch loose. Too loose and seed ends up too deep; too hard and it sits on a crust. Hydroseed goes down best on a surface like that.

Excavation and trenching for drainage

Grading often turns up other drainage needs. We dig and lay buried downspout extensions, cut and shape swales between houses, and trench for shallow drain lines so the regraded yard has somewhere for water to go. For anything deep, structural or involving utilities, we will tell you when you need a different contractor.

Compacted ground is ripped; topsoil and amendments are mixed in.

Grading, Topsoil & Dirt Work Questions

How much slope should my yard have away from the house?

OSU Extension recommends at least a one percent slope away from buildings. More is better near the foundation if the yard allows it.

Can I just spread topsoil on top of clay?

It works poorly. Topsoil should be mixed into the top few inches of the existing soil so water and roots move through instead of stopping at the layer.

Do you do excavation and trenching?

We do shallow drainage work tied to grading: swales, buried downspout lines and drain trenches. Deep or structural digging goes to an excavation contractor.

How soon can you seed after grading?

Right away if it is the right season. If not, we cover the new grade with hydromulch so it does not wash before seeding.
