Grass That Can Take the Heat
Hydroseeding in Harrah starts with the heat. The city often sees temperatures above 100 degrees, and a new lawn has to survive that before it has deep roots. Seed choice, mulch depth and watering plans all come back to getting grass through its first summer.
Bermuda and timing
Bermuda grass loves heat once it is established, which is why it is common across Harrah. The tricky part is the first few weeks. We like to seed in late spring so the grass has time to root before July, and we spray a full mulch layer to shade the soil and hold moisture.
Growing fast
Harrah grew about 22.6 percent between 2010 and 2020. New homes on the edge of town often come with acreage, long driveways and lots of bare dirt after building. We seed the lawn area, the drainage paths and the ditch lines in one trip.
Lower ground than OKC
Harrah sits at about 925 feet, lower than much of the metro to the west. It lies between Oklahoma City and Shawnee, on land that was part of the Citizen Potawatomi reservation before allotment and the Land Run of 1891 opened it to settlers.
Cotton gin past
In the 1940s Harrah was a center of cotton ginning. Old cotton ground can be worn and low in organic matter. Adding topsoil or compost before seeding helps new grass take hold faster.
Watering through the first summer
On a 100-degree afternoon a thin seedbed can dry out in hours. Plan on light watering early in the morning and again in mid-afternoon for the first couple of weeks. After the second or third mowing, cut back to deep soakings a few days apart so roots chase the water down instead of staying near the surface.

Late spring is ideal for Bermuda so it can establish before the hottest stretch.
