Del City Soil Has a Farming Past

Hydroseeding in Del City usually means working with soil that was farmed before it was a yard. In 1946, developer George Epperly bought a 160-acre wheat field at SE 29th Street and Sunnylane Road with a plan to build fifty houses. By 1948 there were 582 homes in Del City, about 75 percent of them built by Epperly.

Old farm ground, small lots

Years of plowing and then house building leave subsoil that packs hard. Most Del City lots are modest in size and have been mowed, parked on and walked over for decades. Before we seed, we break up compacted areas and work in topsoil so roots can get down past the crust.

Dry, then wet

Del City sits in the Cross Timbers, a transition between wetter eastern Oklahoma and the semi-arid high plains to the west. It swings hard between dry and wet weather. That means two risks for a fresh lawn: drying out and washing out. Hydromulch helps with both by holding moisture in and keeping seed pinned down.

Eagle Lake and drainage

Eagle Lake, in the north part of the city, is the only large body of water inside the limits. Yards and lots that drain toward it, or toward street inlets that feed it, should not be left bare. We set silt fence or inlet protection during any regrading and pull it once the grass holds.

A city that is built out

Del City reached its physical limits in 1964 and is surrounded by Oklahoma City and Midwest City. Nearly every job here is a renovation, a rebuild or a single new home on an infill lot rather than a new subdivision. That is a good match for hydroseeding, because we can cover a small yard quickly without sod seams.

If your Del City yard is thin, bumpy or drains the wrong way, we can help with lawn repair, yard grading and new seed. Get a free estimate or call (405) 529-7119.

Del City Questions

Why is my Del City soil so hard?

Many lots were farm fields, then construction sites, then decades of foot traffic. We loosen and amend before seeding.

Can you seed a small infill lot?

Yes. Hydroseeding covers small yards quickly and avoids the seams you get with sod.

Should I worry about mud reaching Eagle Lake?

If your lot drains that way, yes. We put sediment control in place during grading.

How do I keep new grass alive through dry spells?

Water lightly and often for the first weeks, then switch to deeper, less frequent watering once it roots.
